The technology of oilseed press shops produced at Farmet stands on the shoulders of years of experience in the field. This technology involves highly effective expeller presses that are always optimized for a particular task through different possible configurations. Furthermore, we offer extruders, heaters and other machinery and equipment that cover multiple scales of production. Ample possibilities of modification and changes in the assembly provide plenty of solutions for each particular demand; from low-throughput options for special crops to large-scale facilities that process up to 1,000 tons per day.
Due to different properties of different oilseeds, regarding mainly oil content, the technology needs to be optimized for a particular seed type or a group of seeds. In the technology for pressing of vegetable oils produced by Farmet we only use continuous expeller presses in various configurations. We also apply various seed pre-treatments prior to pressing.
These technologies are classified in following categories:
- One-level or two-level. This refers to how many levels of pressing the oilseed undergoes. In two-level pressing, the first press is termed pre-press and the second is called final press. Two-level technologies are employed when yield is the priority, particularly for oilseeds with higher oil content (above 30 %, as in rapeseed, sunflower, etc.). Soya, for instance, has oil content of about 20 % and is more suitable for one-level pressing.
- Cold pressing or hot pressing. This refers to the temperatures, at which the pressing is done. During cold pressing, the oilseed enters the press at a temperature of about 20 °C (ambient temperature) and the temperature of the resulting oil usually does not exceed 50 °C. Hot pressing involves pre-heating of seeds, sometimes up to 100 °C (heating is done using steam heaters, or extruders in technologies involving pressing with extrusion). Heating up the seeds improves pressability, which is why hot pressing achieves higher oil yield. The cost is a higher amount of impurities (e.g. phospholipids) in the oil as well as higher energetic demands. Temperatures above 80 °C also significantly alter proteins and other substances found in press cakes, and change their feed quality. Some species of oilseeds are difficult to digest without heat treatment, as in the case of soybeans.
