In June, we took part at the Victam Feed Processing conference within the Victam FVG Select 2017 fair, which focused on feed processing, process optimization and searching of new protein sources.

In June, we took part at the Victam Feed Processing conference within the Victam FVG Select 2017 fair, which focused on feed processing, process optimization and searching of new protein sources. One of the key assumptions made at the conference is that demand for animal proteins will increase by 50% and dietary calories by 70% by 2050. To meet this demand, there are several ways to increase the production of animal proteins so as to minimize the environmental impact of such an increase in production. The paths are sought in these directions:

  • In order to reduce the energy intensity of the feed production process, e.g. from 2017, it is necessary to isolate the steam piping and to use the IE3 or IE2 drives in combination with the frequency changer.
  • Search for new sources of protein (insects, algae, bacteria, sea star, clams ...) or more efficient use of plant proteins (rape, soy, sunflower ...).
  • Optimization of the feed production process, especially with emphasis on optimal heat treatment to eliminate Maillard reaction products.
  • Optimization of feed dose depending on the quality of input raw materials that is currently available.

Throughout the conference, it seems that the field of feed production has great potential.

Farmet's contribution to sustainable feed production is in the process of optimizing the process in terms of energy intensity and quality of the output product, where in the area of R & D we solve these issues in our own R & D department and in collaboration with universities and research institutions. Building our own know-how and connecting the company with the academic sphere is important for further development and success in this field. We are currently working on an energy recovery system in extrusion technologies and we now offer this system for soybean technology. The recovery system allows a significant reduction in the operating costs of the technology and increases line performance. In addition, together with the Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague, we are working on methods of optimization of the extrusion process, which would be easily transportable and usable in practice. Both topics are very interesting in Farmet R & D not only in terms of customer benefits but also in the field of sustainable feed production.
