Cotton is a multi-purpose crop of worldwide significance. It is grown mainly for the purposes of textile industry. However, unhulled seeds contain about 16 % of oil and high protein content. The oil is used for food and technical purposes. Press cakes find their use in feed industry. Due to its high roughage content, even in hulled seeds, cotton cake is not ideal for nutrition of monogastric animals. The seeds also contain an anti-nutritional substance, gossypol, such that the oil has to be refined before use in food industry. The press cakes intended for feed purposes have to undergo heat treatment (as in the Farmet product of two-level hot pressing).
