The November issue of OFI (Oils and Fats Magazine, www.ofimagazine.com) comes with our article on solvent(hexane)-free soybean processing.

 

The extrusion-pressing technology offers a number advantages over chemical extraction, such as lower operation costs and making do without hexane, a toxic and explosive chemical that requires special safety measures. Despite considerable effort on the part of extraction technology producers, there is no guarantee that either the oil or soymeal will be free of residual amounts of hexane, which may thus enter the food chain.

Farmet technologies demonstrate that soybean, as well as other oilseeds may be processed hexane-free, with many added benefits such as higher quality of press cake and oil or lower energy demands of the process. The extrusion-pressing technology has a strong potential to become a significant source of vegetable oil and press cake, resources for both feed and food industries.
